If it's a low dosage 9 days might be fine but the reason docs taper the dosage is because oral corticosteroids like prednisone suppress the function of the adrenal gland - tapering the dosage gives the adrenal gland a chance to kick back in.

Well he is tapering me 'sort of' - 40mg 3 days, 20mgs 3 days, then 10 mgs 3 days??? I hope he is right - I always worry that they will make some sort of mistake. Yep, that's considered to be a tapered dose. If it were just 40 mg for 9 days without decreasing to 20, then 10, then I'd worry, but it sounds like they got it right.

Well I am on day 6 of my taper so far 40mg, 40 mg, 30mg, 30mg, 20mg, 20mg. I have another 20mg tomorrow; then the next 3 days its 10mg per day than done. My bronchitis seems to be better in that I mean not coughing as much and physically feeling better not as worn down etc.

My problem is my breathing is not better??? I am still having to use my rescue inhaler every 4 to 6 hours. I am still taking the musinex also.

I would have thought that my breathing would be improved at least a little by now??? In fact after I take it -- I actually feel worse for a while??? I will be going to Dr. I feel like I am losing my mind - can anyone help? I'm a little bit confused by your post because you say two different things. At the end of your post you say: My problem is my breathing is not better If the breathing issue you're experiencing is chest tightness without wheezing, it's possible that the tightness isn't asthma-related but is actually acid reflux related.

Prednisone can actually exacerbate acid reflux and the acid may be irritating the lining of your esophagus - the irritation causes a feeling of chest tightness which many people confuse with asthma, and which can cause asthma flare ups in people who have asthma - if you're not wheezing it's very possible that what you're feeling is actually reflux related. Thank you so much for your kind response.

I do believe that is what is happening to me. I have done everything the Dr. I got scared because with how tight my chest has become and the other side effects from the Prednisone - I was actually feeling worse - in a much different way.

With the chest tightness it makes it hard to breath very tight and constricting. I only have 2 days left on the Prednisone 10mg each day - hopefully I will feel better soon! Thank you again for taking the time to respond. Have a very good day. I finished my 'taper' yesterday and have been very ill from the side effects. They seemed to hit me worse each day until yesterday I had to spend the day in bed becasue I was so dizzy and had so much head pressure that each time I stood up, I would throw up.

This is my first ever course of oral prednisone as an adult - it was not a good experience at all. I understand completely that there are times that we must takes meds even with the side effects -because they do help.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to 'flush' my system and try to clear up some of these side effects quickly and get my stomach back to normal? Thank you for your help.
